The Junkyard Workshop: Details

The Junkyard was our summer community workshop for 2006. This was a multi-arts recycling workshop where participants were extremely creative and had lots of fun learning to reuse discarded junk.

The three main activities kept us all very busy throughout the day. Using recycled materials the children designed their own costumes making headbands and other interesting accessories. The bubble wrap and duct tape flew and at the end of the activity we all looked like we belonged to our junkyard tribe. After a short break the children then went on to designing and making their recycled robots. This was a team effort with the best robot designers winning a prize at the end of the day.

"It was totally ace building the robots, we even stayed in at lunch to finish bits off." (Harry Jeavons)

Whilst some teams were busy designing robots others played on junk instruments with Zosia and Julian. They improvised and explored different ways of playing everyday objects like bicycle wheels, plastic bins, pots and pans. These were very inventive and by the end of the session everyone had found his or her own part to play in our rhythmic performance.

After a well-earned lunch break we all came together to learn to spin poi. "Poi" is the Maori word for "ball" on a cord and circus poi spinning is popular all over the world. The Rhythm Kitchen made all the poi the children used at the workshop. These were made using recycled materials and every child went home with an activity sheet of how to make their own poi. Everyone really enjoyed this activity and it soon became clear who the skilful circus spinners were. A drum circle was set up outside for the spinners to move to whilst showing off their skills.

We finished off the day with a short performance of spinning and playing. This was a perfect opportunity for parents, guardians and friends to come along and see how much fun we all had had and what we had achieved in just a day. After the performance, all that remained was to vote for the best-looking robot. This was in deed a tough decision and the Rhythm Kitchen staff were certainly pleased this last job was left up to the audience. to bring a packed lunch.
